FOOD INSECURITY

Rising cost of living and food has created a new “normal”

  • Historic inflation rates have taken the $20 bag of groceries to $66 in the last 20 years – with most rises happening with consumer diet staples.

  • There are more than 44 million food insecure people in the US, including 13 million children – up 45% in the last two years.

  • Despite overall inflation cooling, food production costs are estimated to increase 4.1% in 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

FOOD AS MEDICINE

America is among the least healthy despite our healthcare

  • Unhealthy eating and physical inactivity are leading causes of death in the U.S. Unhealthy diet contributes to approximately 678,000 deaths each year in the U.S., due to nutrition- and obesity-related diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

  • Americans die younger and experience more injury and illness than people in other rich nations, despite spending almost twice as much per person on health care.

  • 20% of low-income adults report their health as fair or poor, compared to only 5% of higher-income adults.
